Issues

Responsible Growth:

I am committed to responsible growth as demonstrated by 14-year record while serving on the Cherokee Planning Commission as appointed by 3 different Board of Commissioners. As a Certified Senior Ecologist and Wildlife Biologist, and 40+ years as a practicing ecologist, I bring an unique skill set in the evaluation of land-use and growth concerns and the preservation of Cherokee’s rural character that we desire to maintain.  During my tenure on the Planning Commission, I have been directly involved in the development of Cherokee’s Land-Use Plan targeting denser development in and adjacent to our cities, while maintaining areas with significantly less dense classifications.  Further, I have sought and achieved in bringing more transparency to our zoning application requirements and revisions to conservation subdivisions that yield greater land conservation value.

Traffic Congestion:

Our ongoing traffic entanglements affect all Cherokee citizens; however, whole-scaled road widening and construction of new roads encourages further growth and development that can be contrary to our collective goal of preserving our rural character.  I believe strategic and targeted road improvements to congested intersections to include additional turn lanes, roundabouts and signal improvements should be our first priority as well as the maintenance of our existing roads to standards that maximize public safety.

Lower Taxes:

The failure to pass the Host Tax referendum in the State General Assembly to allow our citizens to determine their tax liability structure was disappointing. The Host Tax, if passed, will significantly reduce your property taxes and provide additional and needed funding for road improvements. I pledged to work diligently with the County’s state delegation in achieving an opportunity for you to determine your tax liability structure and to maintain our current low taxes, so you and your family deservedly keep as much of your income as possible.

Economic Development:

Achieving targeted economic development not only provides high paying job opportunities for citizens but also provides a vehicle for maintaining low property taxes.  As previously accomplished in my professional career, I pledged to continue to work and collaborate with not only the Cherokee Office of Economic Development/ Development Authority of Cherokee County but also the Georgia Department of Economic Development in seeking and encouraging positive economic developments that directly benefit Cherokee County and its citizens.

Parks & Recreation:

Diverse recreational opportunities that serve passive and active users are essential for a vibrant and healthy community.  We achieved great strides with the previous Parks Bond in advancing recreational opportunities in Cherokee County, but we still need more.  If elected, I will work closely with other BOC members, Cherokee Recreation and Parks and the public to identify opportunities for additional park sites and active/passive recreational opportunities, specifically targeting underserved areas in District 1.

Greenspace:

The District 1 rural landscape comprised of farmsteads and larger lot subdivisions is our treasure and sets the character for Cherokee County that must be preserved for future generations. My proven track record over the past 14 years while serving on the County Planning Commission, 40+years as a professional biologist, and as a concerned Cherokee County citizen, I know the value of preserving greenspace from a social and ecological perspective. Further, I understand that many of the District 1 citizens, such as myself, have selected to live in Cherokee County based on these same principals and values which to live and raise their families.  No one has to convince me that high density developments do not belong here and as your representative on the BOC you have my pledge to maintain the rural character of District 1.

Public Safety:

As a former US Army officer, I know the importance of health and safety services that provide for a thriving community.  Fortunately, Cherokee County offers excellent, accredited and award-winning public safety and response services to include our Sheriff’s Office, Fire Department/EMS, Emergency Management Agency, E-911 Response Center and Marshal’s Office.  These services are led by the best and most qualified leaders assisted by officers and support staff committed to a safe and healthy Cherokee County.  These individuals deserve our thanks and support.  As commissioner and without reservation, I will be their advocate to ensure they have the necessary resources and tools to continue their excellent work going forward.
